MEET GET LIT PLAYERS

MEET LITERATE

The Get Lit Players are a professional performance troupe comprised of teenagers from high schools throughout Los Angeles County who travel across the nation performing both classic and spoken word poetry, inspiring their peers to read, write, be leaders in their communities and participate in the arts. They meet each Saturday from 10-4, logging over 300 workshop and performance hours and perform for over 10,000 teens a year. They have been honored by an invitation to the White House in 2011 and feature prominently in the PBS special Arts & The Mind.

Many of our Get Lit Players get scholarships to college and continue to mentor other youth while there. (Our LITERATE group is for Get Lit Players who go on to college and continue to work with Get Lit as mentors and performers.) UCLA theater graduate and spoken word artist, Steve Connell is the coach of the Get Lit Players.

Novice Players come from high schools throughout Los Angeles County and rehearse each week on Saturdays from 10-2 with the Get Lit Players, exploring the reading, writing, and performance of classic and spoken word poetry. They log over 150 hours of free workshops each year and work up to Get Lit Player status/performances.

  • Every Get Lit Player and Novice Player has access to one on one college counseling through Get Lit’s Next Step service.
  • As a result, nearly 100% of our graduating teens go on to college and nearly 70% receive a scholarship.
  • Graduates of the Get Lit Player program often become LITERATE members to work as poetic mentors by providing over 35 hours of training and perform in concert with the Get Lit Players.
