Get Lit A 12-Week Course in Literacy (and Life) Through POETRY by Diane Luby Lane
(Coming soon! For an advance copy, please contact mimi@getlit.org.)

This is a guide to teaching Get Lit’s standards based curriculum in the classroom. World renowned arts evaluator, Professor James Catterall and his UCLA team evaluated Get Lit In School Program. They followed four classes in Watts, Compton, South Central and Long Beach area schools for a period of six months. They published the results of their findings, which conclude that Get Lit’s in school curriculum is “immensely effective,” and they give it a “resounding endorsement.” They write, “Get Lit promotes good thinking, thoughtful words, high student engagement, and improved student motivation. Students say they find a voice and learn about themselves through poetry.” Click here to read entire evaluation. Click here for an advanced copy.

Magical Poetry Blimp Guide by Carol Muske-Dukes
(For more info, click here.)

As California Poet Laureate, Carol Muske-Dukes created the The Magical Poetry Blimp Pilot’s Guide — a handbook for children (and teachers) on how to read, write, and learn by poems by heart. The Guide is available for free download (or for sale on Amazon), features contributions by Garrison Keillor, Billy Collins, and others, and includes color illustrations. The entirety of the Guide is available at magicalpoetryblimp.org where students can post their own response poems! Diane is a contributor to the Guide and has worked with Carol for the past three years, originally on developing Get Lit’s in-school curriculum. Get Lit is Magical Poetry Blimp’s fiscal sponsor as well as partner on many levels, often in conjunction with the Get Lit Players. Carol is faculty at USC, where she created the PhD program for Literature & Creative Writing.
