Get Lit-Words Ignite and Beyond Baroque Announce Erika Duran as Winner of 2018 Carlos Segovia Heart of Compassion Award

Los Angeles, CA – San Gabriel High School senior, Erika Duran, has been named Winner of 2018 Carlos Segovia Heart of Compassion Award, honoring the memory of Carlos Segovia, a late Get Lit Player & U.S marine. Each year, the award is given to a young writer in pursuit of post-secondary work, and in need of financial support, who exhibits Carlos’s empathy & kindness.

The announcement was made April 28th at Get Lit’s 8th Annual Classic Slam Finals at The Theatre at the Ace Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles, the culmination of the world’s largest youth classic poetry festival.

Winner Erika Duran has been performing poetry for three years. She is very active at San Gabriel High School, where she is the captain of her poetry team. This year Erika’s San Gabriel team won first place in the Classic Slam of 50 citywide teams, and Erika’s poem was the top scoring individual poem of the night.

She is humble, and always there to lend moral support to her friends and community. She has helped to raise her siblings, as well as uplift those in her community. She is incredible.”

The Carlos Segovia Heart of Compassion Award is funded by a partnership between Get Lit-Words Ignite and Beyond Baroque and awards the deserving student $3,000 towards college expenses.
