Last Saturday, May 4th, poets from all over California auditioned for a spot on Los Angeles’ very own Brave New Voices slam team. 6 amazing poets will get a chance to speak their truth in Las Vegas this summer at the 2019 Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Festival, powered by Youth Speaks. Four additional poets will be attending the festival as entourage alongside the competing team. These poets will cultivate culture and help provide insight from various regions of Los Angeles
Poets were asked to bring 2 original spoken word pieces and competed in two rounds to a panel of 6 judges scored from a scale of 0.0 – 10.0. Judges included Jordan Barrow, lead of non-scripted development at Den of Thieves. Brian Sonia-Wallace, veteran spoken word-artist, mentor, workshop leader and creator of RENT Poet. Mila Cuda, Get Lit Player Coach, published author, 2017 Youth Poet Laureate of Los Angeles and served as the 2018 West Coast Youth Poet Laureate! Diane Luby Lane, fearless leader and Executive Director of Get Lit- Words Ignite. Elmo Tumbokon, Get Lit Player Alumni and 2017 Brave New Voices competitor and Raul Herrera, Education Coordinator and Get Lit Player Coach.
