Award based on Outstanding Online Reviews

Los Angeles, CA 12/2019– Get Lit – Words Ignite (Get Lit) announced today it has been named a “2019 Top-Rated Nonprofit” by GreatNonprofits, the leading provider of user reviews of charities and nonprofits.

Get Lit – Words Ignite fuses classic and spoken word poetry to increase teen literacy on the page and in visual media. We cultivate enthusiastic learners emboldened to inspire social consciousness in diverse communities. Founded in 2006 by Diane Luby Lane, Get Lit’s poetry and film curriculum engages young people by providing a creative outlet, community, and real-life work experience, transforming students into artists, activists, scholars, and stars.

“We are honored to be named a 2019 Top-Rated Nonprofit,” says Diane Luby Lane, Founder/Executive Director of Get Lit – Words Ignite. We are proud of our accomplishments this year, including graduating over 8,000 students through our in-school program, hosting our first-ever Middle School Classic Slam, hosting over 150 open mics, community events, and in school “Blitz” assemblies, being featured on an episode of Pamela Adlon’s Emmy nominated TV show “Better Things” called “Get Lit” and our participation in the movie SUMMERTIME, which was co-written and co-stars 27 Get Lit Poets and will be premiering at Sundance in 2020.  The Top-Rated Nonprofit Award is based on the rating and number of reviews that Get Lit received from volunteers, donors and aid recipients. One five-star review was left by a program participant who ended up working with Get Lit after college, saying “I am lucky to say I have experience with Get Lit as both student and teacher. In high school, their curriculum helped me realize that poetry was an art that I loved and cherish to this day. I fell in love with the work that I began to volunteer and tried out for their poetry troupe. Through this group, I received professional writing and performance training for free!! Following this, I was able to receive professional development and eventually work with the organization as a teaching artist. This organization has helped develop me from high school through college. The staff was loving and the mentors were brilliant. I have nothing but good words about this organization!!”

“Get Lit – Words Ignite is a great example of a nonprofit making a real difference in their community,” said Perla Ni, CEO of GreatNonprofits, “Their award is well-deserved recognition not only of their work but the tremendous support they receive, as shown by the many outstanding reviews they have received from people who have direct experience working with Get Lit.”

GreatNonprofits is the leading website where people share stories about their personal experiences on more than 1.6 million charities and nonprofits. The GreatNonprofits Top-Rated Awards are the only awards for nonprofits determined by those who have direct experience with the charities – as donors, volunteers, and recipients of aid.
