Dear Friends & Family,

It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the unlawful deaths of George Floyd, David McAtee, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and all of the other black men and women murdered by the police and systematic racism.

Get Lit is a literacy organization that educates youth through the reading, memorizing, and writing of poetry. Therefore, for the 2020 – 2021 school year our anthology of 150+ selected poems will consist of poems entirely written by black authors and poets. We understand that reading builds empathy and so we will honor black voices by learning their stories, memorizing their work, and responding in conversation with our own spoken response. We are sorely in need of walking in the shoes of our fellow black Americans, celebrating their art, and holding their pain as our own.

We ask that you help celebrate and support these voices. If you have poems, and excerpts of literature by black authors and poets that you think we should include, please send them to kelly@getlit.org

We will make this year’s anthology available for all.

In solidarity,

Get Lit

P.S.We have put together a Black Lives Matters playlist of poems from our talented youth and past Classic Slam Judges.
