Jovana Tankou

Jovana Tankou (she/her) is a first-generation Cameroonian-American poet and filmmaker constantly attempting to dissect the inner workings of the world by creating work that embraces the softer, simpler parts of life. The 17-year-old began her spoken word journey three years ago by becoming the youngest poet to join the Say Word Non-Profit’s Youth Speaks team. Focussing her art on the complexities of teenage-girlhood and the identities that make us feel “other” has led to her being a 2020 YoungArts Spoken Word Winner and Urban Filmmakers Finalist. At any given moment she could be co-producing for Hollywood High School’s quarantine broadcast show or creating playlists on Spotify to match her every mood.
